Choose a specific vehicle. Where data is available, its detail page shows the import cost calculation. We assess any possible duty benefit with you before purchase.

Important: A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact us before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support through the process. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

Model profile

Model history and generations

Generations at a glance

The LR3 arrived in the US for 2005 and introduced the Integrated Body Frame construction — effectively a monocoque bonded to a ladder-frame subassembly, which gave the car its unusual mix of on-road refinement and genuine off-road stiffness. The LR4 facelift landed for the 2010 model year with a redesigned front end, LED lighting, a much-improved cabin, and the second-generation Terrain Response.

Powertrain and equipment

Engines, drivetrain and trims

Powertrain lineup

From 2010 to 2013, US LR4s used the 5.0-litre naturally aspirated AJ133 V8 producing 375 hp and roughly 508 Nm, paired with a six-speed ZF automatic.

Trims in the US market

The LR4 was sold only as a five-door, seven-seat SUV with the trademark stepped roof and stadium seating.

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

The used market stateside

LR4s are plentiful in the US, particularly 2011–2016 cars in sunbelt states where the underbody is not eaten by road salt.

Who should import one

The LR4 suits a buyer who actually needs three rows plus a 3,500 kg towing rating and wants classic Land Rover presence rather than the softer look of the current Discovery.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Inspection plan for this model

For the Land Rover LR4, the agreed inspection plan focuses in particular on frame, underbody, towing or payload modifications, visible corrosion and records of previous use. USCar Trader can document these points through a separately commissioned on-site inspection; inaccessible areas or unauthorised road tests are explicitly recorded as unchecked.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

What US models do differently

US-market headlights use the FMVSS/SAE beam pattern, which differs from the ECE pattern required in the EU, so they may need adjustment or replacement with ECE-compliant units for registration.

German TÜV and registration

Typical changes are headlight adjustment or replacement for correct beam pattern, adding a rear fog lamp if the US car lacks one, and confirming the speedometer displays km/h.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Is the LR4 the same as the Discovery 4?

Yes. LR4 is simply the North American name for the fourth-generation Discovery sold from 2010 to 2016.

Which LR4 engine should I look for?

The 5.0 V8 is smoother and more muscular; the 2014-onward 3.0 supercharged V6 is a little more efficient and pairs with the eight-speed automatic. Both need documented maintenance.

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

How reliable is a used LR4?

Reliable if maintained. Watch the air suspension, V8 timing-chain tensioners, and coolant components, and buy on history rather than price.

Can it still tow in Germany?

Yes, the LR4 is rated up to 3,500 kg braked, subject to the registered figures on the German papers.

How long does the import take?

From purchase to registration, typically several weeks, driven mostly by ocean freight and the customs and TÜV appointments.

Are parts available in Germany?

Yes. Land Rover is sold across Europe, so service parts and specialists are widely available.

How can a specific Land Rover LR4 be checked from Germany?

Available VIN, title and history information can be reviewed in the vehicle profile. USCar Trader can also arrange a separately booked on-site inspection within a scope agreed in advance.
